HISTORY

The South Bohemian Bechyně Golf Club was established on 28 February 1994. The idea of creating a golf course on the recently returned lands of the Paar family following confiscation under the communist regime, was born in 1993. Josef ©»áva, Milan ©»áva and Pavel Hepnar were behind the conception of the first golf course in South Bohemia. Preparation and design works were subsequently commenced. The designer of the course was Kamil Pilát, whilst the works inspector, first caretaker, chairman and trainer was Pavel Hepnar.

The construction of the course took place in two phases. The fist phase was commenced in June 1994 and completed in October 1995. During this phase 7 greens and lanes were created, and a retention tank was constructed for watering the greens. In the subsequent second phase two long lanes of holes 4 and 5 were created leading through the woods, as well as a branch conduit from the Sudoměřice water mains of a length of 1200m (the hydro-geological study unfortunately showed that there was an insufficient quantity of groundwater and at the time it was impossible to take water from the Černice pond). In connection with the construction of the water source the company constructed an irrigation system for 9 greens and foregreens.

The course was opened to the public in summer 1996. The opening was somewhat demanding for both staff and members, since at the time there was still no clubhouse. The clubhouse was reconstructed from the former forestry administration building according to the design of the architect Mr. Machar.

This was originally a traditional preserved with the appearance of a chateau – the Černice fortress from the 15th century. The building has older walling and was later reconstructed in baroque style. According to word of mouth this is probably the original fortress of the Vladyks of Černice. The settlement of Černice was dissolved during the building of the game preserve by Petr Vok, and the fortress was probably then used as a hunting lodge within the preserve.

The reconstruction was completed in 1997. The conditions were now in place for golf and club life.
In 1998 Tomáą Basler took over as caretaker and Svatopluk Čech, who works here to this day, took over as greenkeeper.

Since 1999 the club and course have attained a standard suitable for holding nationwide contests. The standard of maintenance of the grass has improved – this began using rejected lawnmowers from Karlovy Vary and Linz, with amateur gardening machinery. Now everything is on a professional level.

The course also contains a practice range for long drives, as well as a practice area for short puts. The clubhouse is currently undergoing an extensive reconstruction, which relates particularly to the extension of the existing accommodation capacity. Following its completion in April 2008 the clubhouse shall contain ten rooms with ensuite bathroom and toilet, as well as a superb restaurant with a garden terrace and bar.

This season too we wish to improve the quality of our services and of your enjoyment of the game and your club membership. We would like to implement reconstruction of further teeing grounds, certain problem bunkers and their drainage. We also wish to complete the irrigation in the remaining teeing grounds. Further improvements of the course and facilities shall be planned progressively and implemented according to our possibilities. We shall inform you of these improvements at this website.

Another considerable investment to the order of several million Czech crowns is the reconstruction of the Penzion Golf currently under way, which shall double its accommodation capacity. The clubhouse facilities shall also be modified and the cloakrooms modernised. We hope that everything shall be to your satisfaction. This reconstruction should not restrict you in any way, since its completion is planned for April 2008.

As of today’s date the 1st South Bohemian Golf Club Bechyně has 360 members.
